KLOSIAN Project
This project had an imaginary narrative with a finite directive that easily kept me on track.
Tools used:
Play the role of a newly hired Data Analyst for a pharmaceutical company. It's 2022, and aliens are well-known to be living among us. Unfortunately, some aliens are too alien and would like to fit into society more. So, it's up to you to find the best state(s) in which we should market our new prescription.
Project Premise:
PROJECT GOAL:
Which is the best state in which we should market our new prescription?
Are they hostile?
What do they eat?
What are their age?
Use the provided data to answer the questions.
FILE SOURCE:
The project is located at the following link:

Three separate CSV files are titled - aliens.csv, location.csv, and details.csv.

APPROACH:
I spent a reasonable amount of time trying to understand the data and how the columns relate.
Excel:
Run checks on each ID column along with counts to see if the number of IDs matched between files and if there were any duplicates.
See if I have the data to answer any questions.
I adjusted favorite food variables to have them listed correctly by cross-checking IDs and checking the correct spellings and names to determine how the information was recorded. This process had the potential for a significant error since, when done incorrectly, you would have 70K+ records instead of 50K. Researching the spelling prevented me from making that mistake.
Tableau:
Make a chart that answers the questions I already have an answer to.
Work on an answer to the central question of which State would be best to market to.
I thought there could be a different way to solve the question aside from population.
You get a good answer based on the population per State, but I thought it was flawed. Since I didn’t know how to think of it differently, but since I had the answers to all the questions, I started to work on how to present the answers.
Photoshop and Illustrator:
Photoshop to do a basic layout while using Illustrator for the titles.
Bring layout and titles into Tableau.
Tableau:
Import images into Tableau.
As I completed the layout, I got the idea that using the square mile size of a State and the number of individuals would be the best way to figure out which State to market to. I began looking through the internet and found a few sites with the information I needed. I picked one, used Excel to organize the information, and paired it with a primary key.
Tableau:
Import new information and map it to the current information.
This changed the outcome of which States would be best to market the product in. This changed how to deliver the information.
Present for some feedback.
Adjust layout based on feedback.
Conclusion:
This project was fun. It’s the first project in which I merged data not given for a project. It’s the second project I was happy with after learning Tableau.
